Even though we are regulars at the farmer’s market, this is the first year we have done a CSA share. When I ordered the CSA in March I wasn’t sure what to expect so I ordered the largest share available. I figured that I could share it with my parents and neighbors if there was too much for us.
Yesterday was the first pickup. We got there close to the tail end of the pickup but there was still a lot of variety. Everything is still separated by item, so you get to pick out the items that you want, there is a board by the produce that tells you how much of something you are allowed.
We received:
1 beautiful hanging basket (There was a vendor selling like baskets across the way and they were $40 each that I was eyeing on the way in so you can imagine how shocked I was when they told us to grab one on our way out.)
20 leaves of Swiss Chard
6 heads of Romain
9 Radishes
2 bunches of Bok Choy or Tatsoi
and a Half dozen fresh eggs

This picture is after I had washed and rinsed and salad spun the first three bunches of Romaine. I cut up several of the radishes for salads and we snacked on those. I forgot how tasty fresh radishes are. They remind me of sitting on the porch with my Grandma and eating them raw out of the garden. Isn’t it funny how back then you would just rinse something with the garden hose and eat it?
All of the veggies were pretty clean but I gave them all a double rinse anyway. They gave us a recipe for the swiss chard but I kinda made up my own.
I cut the bottom of the stalk off – I remembered that they take a long time to cook. I tossed the stalks in the compost, I am guessing the bunnies and squirrels are going to feast!
Then I added a tablespoon of butter, some fresh chopped garlic and chicken broth to a frying pan. I let that get hot and then I added the rinsed chard that I had torn in one inch strips. I let it simmer on top for about 5 minutes and then mixed it all together and topped it with some red pepper flakes and salt/pepper. I let it finish cooking down on a low heat for about 5 minutes. I was surprised that there was so little of it when it was finished because when I first started cooking the pan was overflowing.
We also had a large salad from the romaine and grilled pork chops.
EVERYONE loved the swiss chard and they were all surprised how great it tasted. I enjoyed making something new and sharing it with my family.
So project CSA is a success so far! Can’t wait to pick up Week 2 and I plan to get there a little earlier this time.
Is anyone else doing a CSA this year? What did you get in your haul? Any other must try recipes out there?

You can get a cappuccino/latte/espresso or like me, enjoy sweet tea…
And think of simpler times…

It could be 5 degrees Fahrenheit and she would still insist she was perfectly warm.
