Helping Cultivate Your Artistic Child’s Gift – Part One

There’s a pile of 70 page, Wide Ruled, 1 Subject notebooks next to my desk. Usually we buy 40 or 50 and by the end of December they are all pretty full of doodles, sketches and unfinished balloon names.

But for some reason, this year we have some left over.

In a world of popular DS, Wii, Xbox and online PC games, my family doesn’t need our old tools. We can play Drawn to Life on DS, create our own levels in Super Smash Brothers on Wii and build our own vehicles in Banjo-Kazooie for the Xbox.

When parents ask me for ideas on what they can do with their kids that is educational, I tell them this: Playing video games is one of the best ways to encourage your child to be artistic.

- How about having a family game night? Instead of Monopoly or Uno, try something on Wii besides the free sports games.

- Take pictures while you play, sometimes those faces during Rock Band can be rather silly.

- Not your turn? Make a video on your i-phone, post it on YouTube and share with the family.

- Have a scheduled family tournament and go all out – buy an inexpensive trophy online and award it to First place. Buy several and award “Most Improved” or “Most Likely to…”

- Or, just sit back and relax and spend some time exploring new worlds via your console. It will be a great chance to learn more about your child and tell them about what gaming was like when you were growing up.

Connect the Dots anyone? I have plenty of paper.
